Pranayama
Bhramari, the humming bee breath.
Bhramari, the humming bee breath, is a classical pranayama named after the bee it sounds like: a soft inhale, a brief hold, and a long exhale carried out on a hum. The sound is the technique. It stretches the exhale and gives the mind something warm to rest on.

The pattern
- Inhale through the nose for 4 counts.
- Hold for 2 counts.
- Exhale for 6 counts on a soft, steady hum.
One cycle · 12 counts · session runs 7 minutes
The hum matters more than the volume. It can be quiet enough that only you hear it; what counts is that the sound stays even, because the sound carries the breath out.
When to reach for it
It is an unwinding practice: the end of a loud day, or any moment that wants softening rather than sharpening. Seven minutes, and the room can be dim; nothing about it needs effort.
Practising safely
Bhramari is a gentle pattern, and the hum should stay soft rather than forced. Practise sitting or lying down somewhere safe, never while driving or in water, and stop if you feel dizzy or unwell. If you are pregnant, or have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, a respiratory condition, epilepsy, or experience panic attacks, check with a doctor before you begin. Reed is for general wellbeing; it is not medical advice or treatment.
Seven minutes, guided by a single orb that settles on the humming exhale. You mark how you feel before and after, and Reed shows you the shift.
Questions
Why the humming?
The hum stretches the exhale and keeps it even; the sound carries the breath out. It also gives the mind something to hold, which is part of why many people find it settling.
Do I have to hum out loud?
A soft hum only you can hear is enough. The evenness of the sound matters more than its volume.
When is Bhramari useful?
It suits the late day: a quietening practice rather than an energising one, at home in the hour before sleep.
Is Bhramari free in Reed?
Yes. Every session in Reed is free and unlimited, with no account. Reed Pro adds personal insights on top; it never locks a session.
